India Not Russia’s Largest Oil Customer
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar once again rebuffed US criticism of India's purchase of Russian crude oil, calling the attitude "selective" and "baffling." While speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Jaishankar made it very clear that India is not Russia's largest oil customer and asserted that much of the criticism of New Delhi is insensitive to facts.
"Let us be clear — China and the European Union buy much more Russian oil than India," Jaishankar reiterated, adding that India's purchases have to be kept in perspective in terms of world energy market stability. He pointed out that even the U.S. had earlier encouraged nations to diversify energy sources to stay away from volatility, a policy India continues to follow.
India’s Oil Imports from the U.S. Increasing
Jaishankar went on to say that India's imports of American oil have increased in recent years, which made it harder for Washington to grumble. "We also buy oil from America. So, I am surprised when the same people selling oil to us are criticizing our decision," he continued.
Western Double Standards on Energy Trade
The ministerial comments are what New Delhi finds to be double standards in the Western reaction to energy trade. While India has been asked to reduce Russian imports, major Western economies have been buying Russian oil directly or indirectly through intermediaries.
India’s Balanced and Pragmatic Approach
India has always insisted that it cannot absorb energy prices or supply interruptions as a rising economy. Government officials contend that Russian imports keep domestic fuel prices in check, which is good for economic growth and containing inflation.
With global energy markets remaining volatile, Jaishankar's assurance put on record India's stand that it will take a pragmatic and balanced approach — importing from all available partners, including the U.S. and Russia, while safeguarding national interest.
